The crowd that formed around Ban as soon as he left the stage never dwindled. Mark took his place at Ban’s side, and they talked earnestly to people, waved their flags, sang songs with strong young voices, and chanted their demands. Manda shrank into the background.

The whole thing stayed peaceful, but only just. There were rumors of riots in other parts of the city. Was that smoke, rising in a thin trail from the south?

Sometimes, government hoppers flew low over the square. People jeered them. That, though, was it. No other government troops, except for a minimal police presence, could be seen anywhere nearby. Mandolian Guards mixed with the crowd, but they were clearly there as part of the protests. People welcomed them with open arms.

Where was the CMP? Dee’s initial relief faded into nervousness.
